Screening for Plagiarism

All submitted manuscripts to the Journal of Instruction and Islamic Religious Education (JIIRE) will undergo a thorough plagiarism screening using the Turnitin application by the editorial board. The screening process is conducted to maintain academic integrity and to prevent unethical publishing practices. The following guidelines apply:

Definition of Plagiarism
  • Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, reproducing text, figures, data, or ideas from another source without proper citation.
  • Self-plagiarism refers to reusing significant portions of previously published work without appropriate acknowledgment or citation.
  • Plagiarism may also include the inappropriate paraphrasing of text without giving due credit to the original source.

Acceptable Similarity Threshold
  • Manuscripts with a similarity index of 15% or lower (excluding references, direct quotations, and template text) will proceed to the peer-review process.
  • Manuscripts with a similarity index exceeding 15% will be subject to further review and clarification.

Consequences of Plagiarism
  • If the similarity index is above 15%, the manuscript will be returned to the author(s) for clarification and revision.
  • The author(s) will be given a maximum of 14 days to revise and resubmit the manuscript.
  • If the revised manuscript is not received within the stipulated time frame, or if the similarity index remains above 15% after revision, the manuscript will be rejected.
  • In cases of severe plagiarism (e.g., direct copying of entire paragraphs without citation), the manuscript will be immediately rejected and the author(s) may be blacklisted from future submissions.

Working Process

The plagiarism screening process is conducted at the initial stage of manuscript submission, prior to peer review. The workflow is as follows:

  1. Initial Screening (1-3 Days)
Upon receiving the manuscript, the editorial team will conduct a preliminary screening to verify the presence of proper citations and quotations using manual checks and offline/online databases.
  2. Turnitin Screening (2-3 Days)
    • After the initial screening, the manuscript will be scanned using Turnitin to determine the similarity index.
    • If the similarity index is 15% or lower, the manuscript proceeds to the peer-review process.
    • If the similarity index exceeds 15%, the manuscript will be returned to the author(s) for clarification and revision.
  3. Revision and Resubmission (Maximum 14 Days)
    • Author(s) will receive a detailed report of the identified similarities and will be required to revise and resubmit the manuscript within 14 days.
    • The revised manuscript will undergo a second Turnitin screening to confirm the reduction of the similarity index.
  4. Final Decision (1-2 Days)
    • If the similarity index remains above 15% after the second screening, the manuscript will be rejected.
    • If the revised manuscript meets the acceptable threshold, it will proceed to the peer-review stage.

Citation and Reference Standards
  • Authors are required to follow the APA referencing style to ensure proper acknowledgment of all sources.
  • Direct quotations must be clearly indicated and properly cited.
  • Paraphrased content must be appropriately referenced to avoid unintentional plagiarism.
